Laser Dermatology: Pearls and Problems
by David J. Goldberg
from Wiley-Blackwell
- The first all-inclusive text on the pitfalls, complications and controversies surrounding the use of lasers in dermatology and aesthetic medicine
- Each chapter starts off by highlighting the key points and essential concepts, followed by a review of the associated pearls and problems
- Provides the reader with tips on how to improve the safe and effective use of lasers
- Images focus on the pearls and problems
Laser Dermatology: Pearls and Problems is different from other laser dermatology books. Each of the five chapters begins by highlighting key points and essential concepts, then focuses on the pearls and problems for each area – based on the author’s vast experience in the field of laser dermatology. Dr. Goldberg addresses:
- Vascular Lasers
- Laser Hair Removal
- Pigmented Lesions, Tattoos, and Disorders of Hypopigmentation
- Ablative Lasers and Devices
- Non-Ablative Photorejuvenation and Skin Remodeling
Dr. Goldberg goes beyond the standard “before and after” approach to use actual images to demonstrate the pearls and pitfalls discussed in the text.
The Book The idea of the book is not to replace the many exisiting books on lasers available. Rather it is to discuss the various pitfalls, complications and controversies surrounding the use of lasers in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. Since their introduction into medicine, lasers have been used very widely in dermatology in particular. Understandably this had led to more and more practitioners buying and using laser equipment with less than adequate knowledge and expertise. In this book, Dr Goldberg (who is an acknowledged expert - see below) highlights the key problems and difficulties that can be encountered in the various dermatological applications of lasers and explains the controversies to the non-expert. The aim is therefore to improve the quality of laser practice amongst dermatologists by explaining things from a user's point of view and in language the dermatologist will understand. This is a genuinely different skin laser book and will be immensely valuable to clinicans. Why is it different to the other books? Since the introduction of lasers in dermatology, a great number of books have been published on the applications from removal of port wine stains to tattoo reversal. However, there is no other book that explores the more controversial aspetcs of laser treatment and shows the perils of using lasers incorrectly. Conversely, this book also provides the reader with tips as to how to improve the safe and effective use of lasers. The author is ideally qualified for this task as one of the most experienced and long standing laser practitioners in the world.
Interventional Fluoroscopy: Physics, Technology, Safety (Wiley-Liss Publication)
by Stephen Balter
from Wiley-Liss
Fluoroscopic guidance plays a central role in an increasing number of minimally invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures. Fluoroscopic apparatus and related resources continue to evolve in support of this fundamental technology. Interventional Fluoroscopy: Physics, Technology, and Safety is the first resource to provide information that the clinician needs for the safe and efficient operation of interventional fluoroscopic equipment. Topics discussed include:
* Basic physical and dosimetric concepts common to all forms of X-ray projection imaging systems
* The structure and function of key components found in the interventional fluoroscope
* The nature of the digital image and associated tools, such as image compression and quantitative angiography
* Radiation biology and radiation effects at interventional dose levels
* Radiation safety, including basic principles and operational and regulatory topics
* An introduction to vascular brachytherapy
* Quality assurance of interventional fluoroscopy equipment
Authored by one of the most renowned experts in this field, Interventional Fluoroscopy: Physics, Technology, and Safety is an essential resource for interventional physicians, medical physicists, technologists, manufacturers, and others involved with modern interventional procedures.
Teaching Atlas of Vascular and Non-Vascular Interventional Radiology
by Brian, M.D. Funaki
from Thieme Medical Pub
This new book in Thieme's highly successful Teaching Atlas series provides 75 cases that cover the full range of vascular and nonvascular interventional procedures frequently performed in clinical practice. Brief sections summarizing the clinical presentation, radiologic studies, diagnosis, and treatment guide the reader through each stage of management. For each case the authors provide the essential background on the etiology of the problem and offer bulleted lists that describe the noninvasive imaging workup, therapeutic options available, and possible complications.
Features:
Teaching Atlas of Vascular and Nonvascular Interventional Radiology is an invaluable resource for residents as well as experienced radiologists and specialists in endovascular surgery.

Optical- Response of Laser-Irradiated Tissue (Lasers, Photonics, and Electro-Optics)
from Springer
In this text, scientists provide a detailed description of the physical events that occur when light interacts with tissue. Their work emphasizes the optical response of tissue during treatment procedures or diagnostic applications of laser light. Supported by numerous illustrations, chapters present methods for estimating tissue optical properties from measurements of reflection and transmission in addition to methods for measuring temperature, thermal properties and rate constants. A discussion on the applications of optical and thermal tissue interactions to various medical problems is included.
Laser-Tissue Interactions: Fundamentals and Applications (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering)
by Markolf H. Niemz
from Springer
"Laser-Tissue Interactions” provides a thorough description of the fundamentals and applications in this field. Basic concepts such as the optical and thermal properties of tissue, the various types of tissue ablation, and optical breakdown and its related effects are treated in detail. Special attention is given to mathematical tools (Monte Carlo simulations, the Kubelka-Munk theory etc.) and approved techniques (photodynamic therapy, laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy etc.). The part on applications reviews clinically relevant methods in modern medicine using the latest references. The last chapter covers today's standards of laser safety, with a careful selection of essential guidelines published by the Laser Institute of America. Numerous research photographs, illustrations, tables and comprehensive summaries make this book a useful guide for graduate students, scientists, and medical practitioners. New end-of-chapter exercises provide readers with the opportunity to check their understanding of key concepts and techniques.
